Community Projects
Community involvement in wildlife management is upheld under the wildlife Act No 12 of 1998 that provided for the establishment of Community Resource Boards (CRBs). CRBs are local community institutions formed along geographic boundaries contiguous to Chiefdoms on Game Management Areas (GMAs) or an open area. ZAWA with financial support from Lusenga Trust facilitated elections that led to the formation of Mushota and Mukanta CRBs. Lusenga Trust’s aim is to facilitate the formation of CRBs in all the Chiefdoms surrounding the Park. The remaining Chiefdoms are Mununga in Chiengi and Nchelenge districts, Mporokoso in Mporokoso district and Mukupa- Katandula situated in Kaputa district. The Trust has printed 5000 Anti- Poaching posters which were distributed among the two CRBs. The Posters were printed in both English and Ichibemba the local language. The Posters sensitize the local communities about the evils of poaching and advantages of Wildlife Conservation.
Two workshops were held whose themes were based on Community Conservation and Tourism development in the areas surrounding the park. All stakeholders were invited and the workshops were well attended. All the Chiefs were invited. Those who couldn’t attend sent representatives from their Palaces. The Trust will continue to facilitate more workshops and seminars for all stakeholders.
The plans to integrate conservation education into the school curriculum of all schools adjacent the Park boundaries. It will also start sponsoring Wildlife Conservation Clubs in both Basic and High Schools.
With the Translocation of 160 ELEPHANTS from SABI SANDS GAME RESERVE in South Africa, the Trust through its Village Game Scouts (VGS) has embarked on educating the local communities on Human- Wildlife conflict and how it can be resolved.
By training the local people to play important roles in conservation education and wildlife management we make a valuable contribution to the local economy while ensuring that the Conservation ethic becomes part of the Community.
